Bald Cap and Prosthetic Application

 Bald Cap Application As my design includes a bald cap, it was important that I practiced this application before the final project.  To apply a bald cap, you will need the following: An Acetone Bald Cap Acetone Cotton buds/brushes Pros-aide  Scissors Wig cap Hair grips Pax paints  Alcohol Palette The first step is to put the hair up under a wig cap and optionally, you can gel back the edges depending on the model's hair length. As my model had very short hair I had to gel the edges back to ensure that they weren't getting in the way of the adhesive or that they would ruin the look of the bald cap.  To apply the wig cap, simply put the hair up in a ponytail and then place toupee clips around the edges of the hair, then cut a hole in the back of the wig cap (if your model's hair is long). Then you use hair grips to secure the cap in place, being careful to ensure that none of them are poking up, otherwise they will be visible beneath the bald cap. Once the wig ca...

 Creating my Prosthetics  Once I had finished the mould process and was left with my blank canvas, it was now time to create the actual silicon prosthetics. The first step is ensuring that your mould is clean by wiping it over with IPA. Once I had ensured it was clean, I added a layer of a wax based agent to prevent the silicon from becoming caught in the small details of my mould.  Once my mould was prepped, I then had to paint the entire thing in small layers using an IPA based cap plastic. You can use either IPA based or Acetone based, however because my final design includes the use of an Acetone based bald cap, it's important that I instead use IPA, otherwise when I am blending my prosthetics into the skin and bald cap, I risk melting through the acetone based bald cap plastic if I use the wrong substances.  Once I had painted 3 - 4 layers of the IPA cap plastic and I had allowed it to completely dry (you should be able to touch it and not see any fingerprints l...

Creating a mould out of silicon

  Creating a mould  The next step was to create a mould out of the sculpts. The first thing you need to do is create 'flashing' around your sculpts. This will act as a wall so that when you are creating the actual prosthetics, you have material to blend.  Once you have added the flashing, you then need to add a wall around your prosthetics so that you have something to fill with the silicon. We used wooden tongue depressors and hot glue. You need to ensure that there are no gaps in your wall as otherwise, the silicon will leak and not create the mould as desired.  Once you have created the wall and gone around all of the edges with the hot glue to make sure it will be water-tight, you can then mix your substances to create the mould. To do this, you will need Silicon and catalyst mixed at a 10:1 ratio, 10 being the silicon and 1 being the catalyst. Sculpting and Floating

  Sculpting the Prosthetics  The next step after face casting was to sculpt the prosthetics using a clay called Chavant. Firstly, we applied a few layers of a release agent to the plaster, so that once we had sculpted the prosthetics, we could remove them from the cast to create a silicon mould. The release agent we used was water based, meaning we could easily remove the sculpts if we applied water to the cast.  This was my first time working with chavant. I quickly learned that it was important to warm the clay up in your hands before use, as before it has been warmed up it is extremely stiff and brittle.  Using sculpting tools and medical images, I sculpted some 'radiation burns', raising them up to create a hollow pit in the skin.  Once the sculpts were the shape I wanted, I then added lines and pores to create a skin-like texture using a rake and a stippling sponge covered in powder.  It was important to ensure that the areas in which I had decided to ...

Live Casting/Face Casting

  Live Casting/Face Casting  The first step in wanting to achieve this character and ensure the prosthetics I had designed fit my model, was to live cast/create a face cast. This involved creating a replica of the model's face in plaster.  To do so, firstly you need to ensure that you have a clear workspace and all of your equipment required. The tools you need are as follows: Two bowls of water Alginate  Plaster bandages (common brand is 'mod roc') Cotton Wool Cotton buds Vaseline Gloves The first thing you want to do is cover your model's hair, you can do this by either using a bald cap or covering the head in cling film. It's important to ensure that all of the model's hair is covered, otherwise it could get caught in the alginate. You should also prep the eyebrows and eyelashes by covering them in Vaseline. Character Design and Development

 The Brief For this assignment, we were instructed to create and develop a character using Special Effects tools and techniques. We were given three categories/themes to choose and design our look around, these were:  Dystopian Character War Victim Torture Victim I started off with designing a couple of basic face charts based off the themes that I felt most inspired by. I did a quick sketch of a character inspired by a nuclear apocalypse and a quick sketch of a character inspired by a chlorine bomb victim in the trenches of the first world war.  After coming up with two basic sketches I decided I felt more inspired by the Dystopian theme, as I wouldn't have to focus on realistic, historically accurate depictions of wounds and instead could be a lot more abstract and inventive with my thinking. I decided I wanted to stick with the nuclear apocalypse theme, as I really wanted to make some prosthetics of radiation burns and focus on what would happen to someone who had...
